Who Are Baby Boomers?

Baby Boomers are those men and women born between the years 1946 and 1964. They are the people who lived through the Beatle Saga, the Hippie Era and Woodstock. These are the people who have witnessed the Vietnam War as well as the death of President John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby. They were around when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. Baby Boomers experienced the Great Depression, where masses of people lived in poverty, not having decent housing or jobs right here in America. But then, the bad situation was reversed and poor families got a chance to have a piece of the American dream. This came about because the GI Bill was put into action. Baby Boomers experienced this event too.

Baby Boomers from this time period are now entering the prime of their lives, the fabulous 60’s. Ms. Casey Kerschling is said to be the first baby born in this time period. When we look at some of the well known names that were born during the “boom”, we will find names like Michael Jordon, David Letterman, Oprah and Madonna. Also on the list of baby boomers is our president, Barack Obama.

It is reported that during 1946 and 1964, there were 75.8 babies born in the United States. However, the largest group of baby boomers was born in 1957. During this year, there were 4.3 million babies born. It is said that the rise in birth during the “boom” came as the result of American soldiers returning home after fighting in World War II.
